Highlighting some of the top elite gymnasts.

Phil Noble l Reuters

Gymnastics is a sport that is misunderstood by many. In a previous article, I discussed why the sport has not received much interest amongst black people in the United States and debunked the myths and misconceptions with this claim. The reality is that the road to elite-level gymnastics is not for everyone and the accessibility and knowledge of it isn’t there yet.

Inspired by a Twitter thread, I decided to go slightly more in-depth by creating a list of 28 black artistic gymnasts (past and current) who succeeded on the national and international stage. The purpose of this list is to showcase that there indeed are gymnasts of African descent who have contributed to the sport representing their respective nations with excellence.

Angelo Assumpção — Brazil

  • 4x South American Champion
  • 6x National Champion
  • Won gold on the vault at the 2015 São Paulo World Cup

Reiss Beckford — Great Britain/Jamaica
