I live in Asia (Taiwan). Prior to moving here, I did a travel study program in Hong Kong when I was in university. Normally I don’t eat in the mornings (at most just fruit or oatmeal), but due to the 12 hour time change my eating schedule was off for the first few days, so I decided to see what was offered at the breakfast buffet. I was surprised to see people eating rice, noodles and soup for breakfast. Normally I wouldn’t crave that kind of stuff until afternoon or evening. Fast forward 4 years to today, when I do decide to eat in the morning I don’t mind a Taiwanese style breakfast (which isn’t that far off from your country).
Honestly the “standard American breakfast” just needs some tweaks that could make a huge difference:
- Add vegetables to the omelette/scrambled eggs (or just add vegetables in general).
2. Omit the added sugar in things like pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, grits, yogurt.
3. Admit that cereal, muffins and donuts are desserts and therefore not a proper way to start the day.
4. Opt for a piece of fruit instead of “fruit juice.”
If the US did that, then breakfast would be on par with many places.
