I live in Taiwan and after 7 years, I’m moving back to the US to be closer to family. When I did a trial visit last year, I scoped out some pseudo walkable areas that I wouldn’t mind living in once I save enough money to live on my own again. I grew up living near an Aldi’s and luckily I’ll be living near one when I go back.
Food-wise, I have spent the last year learning how to make my favorite Taiwanese and other Asian foods (to the best of my abilities so I can make them when I’m in America).
Another tip: if there’s a large foreigner population where you live - shop where they shop. There’s probably an international market nearby. Half of my family is from Jamaica, so this is what my family did whenever they wanted to cook Jamaican food.
You can do this by locating your nearest Asian, African, Caribbean or Latin American market.
