I still get hit with the “you don’t look American” and then asked about my family history. 🙃
I’ve been abroad for 7 years, and while it’s fun the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. A lot of problems Americans claim to runaway from (divisive politics, racism, sexism, wealth gaps etc) most certainly exists in other places. We’re just unaware of the social-political climate of the places we flock to. And since people often live in “foreigner bubbles” it’s even harder to take notice. I call it the foreigner cheat code - whatever problems are in that country may not apply to foreigners, especially those of “first world” nations or people of certain races/ethnicities.
