People were also more likely to cook from scratch 60 years ago. Something like bread should have no more than 3 ingredients, and will be moldy if you don’t consume it in a timely manner. I doubt anyone would find this at their local grocery store. Even when people bought unhealthy things like soda, juices, tea and coffee with added sugar, cookies, cake, etc., they were sweetened with cane sugar or honey, not high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, “natural flavors” and other chemicals that enhance the taste and increase its shelf life.
A lot of produce even tastes fake with all of the chemicals in it. When I grew tomatoes and cucumbers at home, it looked nothing like the ones I saw at the grocery store, yet it tasted much better.
Maybe some additional tips should be
1. Eat foods with ingredients that your grandma can recognize.
2. Eat food that spoils quickly if you don’t freeze it.
3. Eat produce that looks deformed.
