This is interesting. I lived in nearby Taiwan for 7 years, and foreign residents are given a Chinese name when applying for a resident visa. Sometimes it's the Chinese equivalent of their name and other times, it's completely random, or in my case.....backwards: 歐可妮 (ou kě nī). 妮 可 would've made more sense.
