What is freedom?

Freedom [free-duhm]: noun

  1. the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical constraint
  2. exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc.
  3. the power to determine action without constraint
  4. political or national independence
  5. personal liberty, as opposed to bondage or slavery

As you can see, there are many ways to define freedom. Many of my fellow Americans will celebrate their freedom since it is Independence Day in the United States. Many members of self-proclaimed progressive and conscious communities use this day to talk about the umpteen problems in the country and why the collective definition of freedom in American society does not apply to them. While I agree with much of the critics, it would be foolish to not admit that we do have it pretty good here from a global perspective.

Freedom Is A State Of Mind

I think everyone’s idea of freedom tends to focus on a specific aspect based on what they value the most, which could explain why there are so many conflicting opinions on what freedom really means. Some people value the little freedoms that are often taken for granted in the westernized “free” world like the freedom to critique your country’s government or practice a religion without persecution. Some see freedom in financial independence, where they owe zero debt. Some see freedom in entrepreneurship where they call the shots. Some see freedom in having a strong enough passport, where they have a plethora of opportunities for work and travel.

Like success and happiness, freedom is also relative. It is based on what is important to you. Find your freedom.

What does freedom mean to you?
